Na Lei

Lei Packages

Leis of temporary materials were stored and carried about in ti leaf packages called pu'olo la'i or narrow banana stalk trays called ha mai'a.  Leis of permanent materials were wrapped in soft kapa and stored in covered containers called 'umeke pohue and 'umeke la'au.  In post Cook times after the introduction of tobacco, feather leis were stored in tobacco tins and bits of tobacco.  In contemporary times, they are still stored with tobacco to ward off insects that may ruin the leis.
