Kikania
The somewhat poisonous, round, orange
fruits of this very thorny, perennial plant are pierced through their centers
starting at the stem scar, and strung on strong cord. The lei kikania is
valued for its brilliant color and lasting quality. Breast length is best
for this material since the roundness of the fruits causes the lei to roll off
the shoulders if the length is longer. Moloka'i, Kalaupapa in particular,
is noted for its lei kikania.
