Lei Pua Kalaunu
The lavender variety of the
crownflower was introduced before the white in about 1888. It
was a favorite of Lili'uokalani, last of the reigning monarchs, and
did not become popular until after her death in 1917. the white
crownflower, was introduced about 1920. The crownflower is more
or less poisonous. The milky sap sometimes irritates the skin
and if ever dropped into the eyes can cause sever inflammation and
pain.
Crownflower leis became popular
in the late 1920's. The flowers have a pleasant odor and are
usually strung through the centers for the lei pua kalaunu.
Crownflowers are found growing
best at the lower elevations and the dry, hot areas of the islands.
