The Lei Making Methods
HILI, the braiding, plaiting
method.
The term applied only to the
braiding of a single material. A binding thread was not
used. Constructed by this method were lei palapalai, lei pala'a,
lei pa'iniu, lei limu pahapaha, and sometimes lei maile when three or
more lengths were used. Plaiting three strands was used most
often.
