Lei Awapuhi
It was first brought to Hawai'i
by the Chinese around 1870 and comes in a number of varieties with the
most popular and available being the yellow and white ginger.
For making leis, the flowers
are gathered in the evening when they are beginning to open. The
yellow ginger is delicate as well as extremely fragrant, and once
picked does not last long. It is valued for its beautiful
fragrance and the love it represents.
